Knockderry House was built in 1846 as a summer residence for David Anderson and his wife Anne Blyth. The house was eventually converted into a small guest house in 1966.
Knockderry House has been a hotel since 1966, when it was converted from a private residence into a small guest house with only 7 bedrooms. Initially, it was run as a bed and breakfast offering the guest simple accommodation in a beautiful location.
However, Knockderry House was originally built as a summer escape for a wealthy Glaswegian family and the following information was gathered with the assistance of Mary Bylth - a decendant of that original family.
William Lieper (1836-1916) is a name famously associated with the architecture of Helensburgh and the surrounding area. He was known both as a domestic architect and a commercial architect. Some of his city work includes the Partick Burgh Halls, Glasgow Gas Light Building, the interior of Stirling Library, the Banqueting Hall of Glasgow City Chambers, Dowanhill Church and the Sun Life Building in Glasgow.
Leiper came to know quite a few of the big Glasgow industrialists of the 19th century during his commercial work. This offered him an introduction into domestic architecture and commissions to design and redesign some of the grand country houses and mansions of the Glasgow aristocracy and rich merchant
Leiper worked with a range of artists in the arts-and-crafts movement, and this work work is evident throughout Knockderry with delicate stained glass, woodwork, and paintings. The stained glass includes work by J. & W. Guthrie, who were influential in the Glasgow Boys movement founded in the late 1880s.

Alway an easy wat to tell if a hotel is genuinely dog friendly or just dogs tolerated...is there a doggy guest welcome pack? Knockderry House is definately dog friendly - they have bonios in the room, water bowls in the entrance hall and even your own dog towel.
You made us and our two wee dogs so welcomed on our arrival. Our master room was superb and all of your wonderful team could not have done more to make us so comfortable. Your food was delicious and the whole ambience was perfect.
We can honestly say as regular visitors to many hotels across, Europe, the UK and Ireland, that you offered the loveliest experience for us. You are not just a dog friendly hotel, you are dog lovers, all of you.
Lovely stay at this picturesque hotel. Views picture perfect and the hotel has all the ingredients required for a Scottish getaway - roaring fire, tartan carpets and great food & drink. Evidently following the COVID-19 guidelines to the letter which was reassuring!
All of the staff were warm, friendly and had excellent customer service skills. They have taken great care to ensure the hotel is safe for everyone during the covid-19 pandemic whilst not taking anything away from the experience.
Thank you everyone! We will definitely stay here again if we return to this beautiful part of Scotland.
Just had the most wonderful 2 days staying at Knockderry House for a family wedding. The staff were superb, the rooms very comfortable and the food outstanding. Thanks to all at Knockderry for a memorable experience.
We celebrated our wedding anniversary there. The staff was delightful. When they heard that it was our anniversary they kept the nicest table for us (with the best view). The food was outstanding . It is a bit remote so plan on staying in for dinner. You will not be disapointed!
Stayed here for 2 nights on a mini break. Location is stunning with views over Loch Long. Our room was large with a four poster bed. Staff were excellent, very friendly and very attentive. Food was excellent as well for both evening meal and a fantastic breakfast . It is dog friendly with an area set aside so you can dine and have your dog with you and there are good grounds for walking them.
The food was both exceptional in taste and presentation (it is comparable to Michelin star food). It was also nice that we were allowed to bring our dog into the main dining area as they had partitioned off a separate area for dog owners, so many dog friendly hotels still treat you as a second class guest when you bring your dog but the Knockderry Hotel definitely treats you like any other paying guest.
My partner and I booked this as a little treat to end our trip around Scotland. It was such a wonderful find. The setting is just stunning as is the house itself. We booked the mini break for a king room, however upon arrival the lovely receptionist who greeted us upgraded us to a Master suite! The room was a great size with a four post bed and very comfy armchairs at the window to look out over the loch.
Best break away to relax. Food was up to a high standard , there steak is one of the best steaks I have ever had, it was so tender it melted in your mouth! Staff where all lovely and welcoming. Dogs where welcome was nice to see them walking about aswell.
Spent 2 fantastic nights at Knockderry Country House Hotel, we absolutely loved it! Great touring base, very dog friendly, staff were all fantastic and very helpful. The food was fabulous. Our room (4) was beautiful, the hotel is beautiful.
Highly recommended!
Just returned for a fantastic Valentines night away. From the warmest of welcomes from Dan, the stunning Library Suite to the excellent dining, Knockderry certainly delivered an exceptional experience which we will certainly be recommending and be back ourselves. Thanks so much for looking after us.
It is very difficult to know where to start or even what to say about the experience we had at Knockderry Country House Hotel for our wedding over the weekend 24th to 26th June 2016. What an absolutely awesome experience both ourselves and all of our guests had at the weekend (including our dogs, Ruby & Poppy) – just perfect!
I married my wonderful husband in Knockderry on 7th May 2016 and me and our guests had an outstanding experience. A flawless day that will be an amazing memory for years to come. Thanks for making our special day such an outstanding one. Much love.
